5 Things to Do to Calm Your Nerves Down When You Get too Worried

Each day we are faced with many challenges and obstacles in life, that can lead to worrying. How can we not worry, there is just so many things going on all at once.From work emails, bad news on every section in the media, to our family affairs, and personal issues.

I am big worrywart myself, for I worry about every other thing under the sun. The question I tend to always ask myself is how does one turn from a worrier to a warrior?

Alhamdullilah, during the Prophet’s (S.A.W) darkest hours, the gift of the five daily Salah (prayers) were sent to him.  

So, what do I do when I worry too much? Pray it off.

“And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]“[Qur’an: Al-Baqara, Verse 45].

Prayers I have found to be one of the best ways to put my worries away from my heart, and place them into my hands.

 

These 5 steps during prayers help me to channel these worries:

1. Address the worry

Prayers is not something you use as a way to wish for things but rather to address your worry internally. What better way is there to do so, than conversing with Allah about the cause of our anxieties and worries?

Do not fight or suppress them, rather acknowledge it for what it is. The more you fight it the more it retaliates, so just let your thoughts flow.

 

2. Choose your focus

In prayers we can find what truly matters to us by looking at the things we ask for in prayers. What we ask for during prayers is our focus outside of it.

If we ask for a nice car and our every action outside will be leading to that goal, however if we ask to wake up earlier during the day for Fajr, every decision will be based on that too.

 

3. Detach from bad thoughts

In prayers I often find all sort of thoughts that does not belong in my prayers to come up. The best thing to do is to label these thoughts as what they are and never take them as being part of you.

We can’t get rid of some bad things within us. It is just not how we are built. The best thing to do is just to label them and let them go.

 

4. Be in the present moment

Prayers is our practice to be mindful at all times. The remembrance of God allows us to be more conscious of our own being.

We pray for the things we want but we focus on the work at hand.

When Obi Wan Kenobi asked Master Qui Gonn that should he not be mindful of the future, he responded with:

“But not at the expense of the moment. Keep your concentration here and now, where it belongs”

 

5. Enjoy the conversation!

Do not take things too seriously. You are talking to the Lord of the world, I understand it is serious business.

However also know that this lord has traits such as the most loving (Al-Waddud), the gentle (Al-Latif) the provider (Al-Razzaq), and the most merciful (Ar-Rahim).

Take it easy and just be honest. If you cannot be honest when nobody else is in the room except your Lord, who else can you be honest with?
