Today, 20th November 2018, is the day in which our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born. According to the Islamic calendar, he was born on the 12th Rabi’ul Awwal in August 570 AD. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia and was the very last of Allah’s messenger sent to this world. On this day, Muslims celebrate Maulidur Rasul, to commemorate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. Maulid actually means birthday, al-rasul or al-nabi simply means “prophet” or “messenger”.

Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing”. (Al Ahzab, 33: 40)

Being the most important figure of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is very well-known up until today. He was the one who restored the one-god belief of the previous prophets Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Jesus and other prophets that were assigned to their respective regions.

He was recognized due to his noble acts and great successes in freeing the community from the prolonged “dark-age” of ignorance and guiding them into the “light” of knowledge, faith and advancement in human social development. Allah has made Muhammad one of the greatest blessings for not only Muslims but the entire humankind.

Truly you (Muhammad) are of magnificent character” (Al-Qalam, 68:4).

We sent you not but as a mercy for all creatures” (Al-Anbiya, 21:107).

On top of that, even the westerners, acknowledge and honor our prophet for his great success and notable kindness. For example, Michael H. Hart, an astrophysicist, and author have listed Muhammad at the top of his list of the most influential persons in History.

Of humble origins, Muhammad founded and promulgated one of the world’s great religions, and became an immensely effective political leader. Today, thirteen centuries after his death, his influence is still powerful and pervasive”. – Michael H.Hart, 1978

Having fun on this public holiday? As Muslims, we all know that today is Maulidur Rasul. But do we actually know how to observe this day? Here are the 5 ways to remember and honor our beloved prophet Muhammad!

  1. Learn about the Sunnah and Hadith

The Sunnah and Hadith are the gems that we should cherish and preserve. Besides the Quran, our prophet has mentioned that he had left us with the Hadith and Sunnah as guidance. Sunnah is how the prophet SAW acted. The way he prayed, ate, slept, conversed, handled conflicts and how he behaved toward his families and companions. Conversely, hadith is the proverbs of the Prophet SAW. From the hadiths, we can learn from his wise and encouraging words. We should learn the Sunnah and Hadith and slowly train ourselves to practice them. By doing so, others might learn from us and together, we can keep the Sunnah and Hadith alive! Here are some examples of Prophet Muhammad’s Sunnah and Hadith!

Hadith

Anyone who shows the way to something good has the same reward as the person who does it. (Muslim)

The best of you is the one who learned and taught the Quran. (Bukhari)

When a man dies no further reward is recorded for his actions, with three exceptions: Sadqa which continues to be supplied, or knowledge from which benefit continues to be reaped, or the prayers of a good son to his dead father. (Muslim)

  1. Sending lots and lots of salawat upon Prophet Muhammad SAW

“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace”. (Al-Ahzab, 33:56)

Did you know that offering salawat upon our beloved prophet (pbuh) is one of the greatest worshipping acts that a Muslim can do? Not only that this act is highly encouraged, but it is also one of the highly favorable supplications. Sending salawat is one of the ways to honor, love and respect our beloved prophet SAW. On this special day, we should gather in a group with friends to offer salawat. We could either join a group at the mosque or follow the live salawat on television. Sending salawat after each prayer would also be a very easy practical way to honor Prophet Muhammad SAW.

  1. Read the Quran

On this day, we should also increase our Quran recitation. As we all know, the Quran is the book of Allah. It contains the messages that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had delivered to us from Allah, through Jibril the angel. We should at least attempt to understand the beautiful messages comprised within the sacred Al Quran. We can start by reading the Quran translation, verse by verse, to really understand about Islam and how Allah had conversed with Prophet Muhammad SAW and the prophets before him. Our prophet had struggled a lot in standing up for Islam and spreading the messages. Don’t let this effort go to waste!

Spread the goodness by sharing one or two Quran verses to others. Also, check out these lovely Quran with translations by Yayasan Restu! You can kill two birds with one stone by purchasing the Quran and donate at the same time!

Of course, not only on this day that we should remember and honor Muhammad. We don’t idolize or worship him. We don’t uplift him as a god or even close to that extent. The main point of this day is to celebrate in a way that we fall deeper in love with the prophet through his actions and words.

Once you get to know him, you’ll fall in love and want to be like him, his good characters and all. Through this day, we should aim to be please of him, honor him, follow his good reported actions, be motivated and aspire to become a good person like he is. Slowly but surely. We should really take Muhammad SAW as our role model because he is indeed the greatest human being that has ever set foot on earth. And lastly, to share his good messages to those around us!
