Ever wondered what Deepavali means? What about Diwali?
Well actually they are the same. Deepavali or Diwali is known as the Hindu’s light festival. It symbolises the victory of kindness or goodness against darkness or evil. The day became special because of the success in defeating the evil as portrayed in the story of the battle between Lord Rama and the defeated demon King Ravana in Ramayana.
During these festive days, which normally would last up to 5 days, they would pay a visit to their loved ones. Just like any celebrations, inviting families, relatives and friends over to the house is a common thing to do. People would bring either self-cook foods or deserts or the ones brought from the shop.
Besides the morning oil bath, the Hindus would be wearing new and bright clothes because it is believed to bring good fortune and wealth. Also, they would prepare gifts for their families and sometimes friends. Who doesn’t love gifts right?
So what we as non-Hindus can do is prepare gifts for those who do celebrate Deepavali. Some of us would be invited to an open house or for any meet up session. Some companies also have the ‘Exchange Gifts Day’ during festive seasons. Others would simply want to give presents because they want to.Been thinking of what sort of gift to give your Indian friends? Can’t think of anything? No worries!
