September 11th 2016 sounds like a very long time ago. Memories of things that had happened that year are slowly fading away from our minds. But the goosebumps and the overwhelming feeling of awe that we felt the second the entire building went pin-drop silent once the emcee announced to start reciting the Quran quietly together still vibrantly live in the memory of those who were at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (SHAS) Mosque, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) that morning.
The inaugural World #QuranHour was a fullhouse event with an estimated attendees of 4,000. The mosque was packed, in fact overflowing with people from all walks of life. They brought along their families, neighbours and friends.
It was early Sunday morning, just one day before the second Eid celebration, the Eid ul-Adha, 9th of Zulhijjah to be specific, in conjunction with the day of Arafah. The International Islamic University Malaysia was the proud host of the first ever World #QuranHour. The VIPs on behalf of the respective organisers, political figures, CEOs, ambassadors, celebrities all came together to recite the Holy Quran with the public.
When it was time for the Solidarity Recitation, the emcee signalled all the 4,000 attendees in the mosque to start reciting the page of the Quran that has been assigned to them. The entire space instantly went silent. Within five minutes, the Quran was completed about six times collectively.
It was also held simultaneously at 650 other locations in Malaysiaand at 50 countries across the globe that very same day. Imagine how many times the Quranic verses have been recited and pondered upon by individuals across cultures and social status worldwide. A truly humbling experience it was to see people make the effort to leave their house early in the morning, one day before Eid, most were fasting since it was Arafah day.
The World #QuranHour 1438H held last year, 31 August 2017, was no different. It just keeps getting better and better. The organisers are currently gearing up for a far better and bigger World #QuranHour 1439H which will be held on 7th June 2018. The prime location will be held at IIUM SHAS Mosque from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm.
The programme, an initiative by the Warisan Ummah Ikhlas Foundation (WUIF), aims to get more countries and communities onboard this annual event. All are most welcome to join in on the journey to instill the habits of reciting and pondering upon the Holy Quran in our daily lives and community.
