What do you look for when you log in to your social media? What sort of topic interests you? Or do you simply scroll through the social media without a purpose?
As Muslims, we need to have a purpose in everything we do. To make use of the social media one could learn how to be inspired by the so-called “Social Media Influencer”. Some Muslim influencers that we could look up to are Mufti Ismail Menk and Sonny Bill Williams.
Mufti Ismail Menk is known to be a popular Islamic preacher who is very active in social media, with 3.85 million followers. He shares beautiful reminders through his twitter, Instagram and youtube channel.
One of Mufti Menk’s good friends is the famous All Black star, Sonny Bill Williams. He has won the Rugby World Cup twice and was the first Muslim to be wearing the All Black jersey. He converted to Islam about 9 years ago and has inspired many people through his personal sharing on how Islam changes his life. He occasionally shares about his rugby training and games, family and personal reflections.
Another social media influencer is Datin Vivy Yusof, the co-founder of FashionValet and The dUCk Group. Having 1.5 million Instagram followers, Vivy is a well-known entrepreneur and an active blogger. Her sharing on the success of Fashion Valet has inspired many people to go for their dreams, persevering throughout the hardship and being the best wife and mother to her children.
The name Mizz Nina is known by many. Everyone had witnessed her inspiring changes throughout the many years. Not only that she has developed herself into a role model muslimah, she has been very active in preaching about Islam. She is also an activist. She does volunteering works in countries like Syria and Istanbul. She even has her own youtube channel (DOPStv), in which she collaborates with Muslim sisters around the world. She inspires people to be consistent in Islam and that to change is not impossible.
From these influencers, we can see that they all have different backgrounds and different stories. People get inspired differently through different stories. Everyone undergoes hardships and experiences turning points at different times in their lives.
In line with the meaning of Awal Muharram, which is the Islamic New Year, the stories of these inspiring influencers could be a new beginning for some of us. Awal Muharram is the month in which our prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his followers migrated (Hijrah) from Mecca to Medina. That hijrah had allowed them to have a new start and have a much better life, away from the torture. They had sacrificed by leaving behind all their belongings and for some, their loved ones.
From the story of the Hijrah and the social media influencers, it can be said that sacrifices are needed when it comes to making a fresh start. What’s important is to have a good intention and the willingness to sacrifice in achieving something meaningful. It is really important to note that, to become the best version of ourselves is not easy. Nonetheless, it is definitely possible. We should never give up in bettering ourselves and keep praying to be steadfast in our deen.
