Small Deeds Leads To Awesomeness: Lessons From Superheroes

"And whatever good you do, (be sure) Allah knows it.'' (Baqara, 2:197)

Small deeds are never over looked in the sight of God. A lot of people tend to underrate small deeds as they think that it will not make a difference. However if all of us were to play our small parts, the world would definitely be a better place.

Just think of how clean the streets would be if everybody made sure that they always dispose their own rubbish at its proper bins. It does not even require us to go beyond our call of duty, just picking up after ourselves would be an amazing act on its own already!

The Quran has stated that “And whatever good you do, (be sure) Allah knows it.” (Baqara, 2:197)

These superheroes are fine example of how a small deed with good intention can lead to awesome things.

1. Ant-Man

The latest instalment by Marvel in their Cinematic Universe lineup would be Ant-Man. Each of these movies are set apart by each character’s motivation or drive as to why they end up being superheroes.

Steve Rogers became Captain America to fight a war. Tony Stark built the Ironman suit because he wanted to stop terrorist from using his weapons. Bruce Banner transformed into the Hulk because he wanted to replicate the super soldier serum.

In the midst of all these big heroes, it’s easy for us to forget that at times our reasons to do big things could be because of the simplest things in the world.

Scott Lang, who eventually becomes the Ant-Man is a reminder for us as to how small deeds can lead to big things.

The only reason Scott Lang became the Ant-Man was because he wanted to pull his life together to take care of his daughter. His big awesome adventures didn’t come from a place of him needing to save the world. He just wanted to make sure his daughter’s world is safe.

Scott Lang is a fine example of how good intentions could lead to bigger and better things in life. You can see him sincerely making an effort by working in places like Baskin Robbins before finally donning the Ant-Man suit, to make ends meet the Halal way.

2. Kamala Khan

Another Marvel character that can teach us the awesomeness of small deeds is Kamala Khan.

Everything about this character embodies how small deeds can change the world. Kamala Khan is a Pakistani Muslim Superhero from New Jersey. She started her crime fighting days with villains that are times underrated by the big heroes, for being too small of a mess for them to clean up.

She eventually joins the Avengers line up! Teaming up with the likes of Captain America and Ironman.

Her success among the fans is something that is also worth mentioning as it reached number 2 in the New York Times Bestseller list in November 2014! This is definitely an amazing feat considering she is a newly introduced character.

One of my favorite quotes from Kamala is “Mastering bigness is easy. It’s mastering smallness that takes work”

It’s the little things that’s hard to do.

3. Batman

The Dark Knight Rises conclusion showed how it is the simple acts in life that truly matters. The whole Dark Knight trilogy by Nolan was filled with larger than life action sequences but it never lost the spirit behind the story.

What I love about the ending of the series is that the true hero that started Gotham’s Batman adventures was perhaps Jim Gordon. Gotham City’s Police Commissioner.

This of course referred to Gordon when he first met Bruce Wayne when he was a child after his parents were murdered. The event that led him to someday becoming the caped crusader.

4. Bilal

Bilal, one of the Prophet’s great companions is considered to be a superhero of his own league by Muslims around the world. He has endured torture, fought wars, in God’s name. Bilal is also the first muezzin, the person to lead the call to prayer in a Mosque.

Despite all his amazing achievements, when the Prophet asked him what he been doing because the Prophet heard his footsteps in Paradise, he said he could not think of doing anything that is different or dissimilar than what other people are doing. The only thing he could think of is he would pray two Rakaat after Wudhu/ ablution. And I keep praying until the decree of God takes me to a different direction.

Such a simple act of redirecting your heart and sincerity is what counts in God’s eye. Bilal could have easily picked any of the more ‘worthy’ accomplishments in his life but decided to choose the simplest one as to why his footsteps was heard in heaven.

When Gordon asked Batman who the man behind the mask was, Batman answered:

“A hero can be anyone even a man who does something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy’s shoulder to let him know the world hadn’t ended”
