Tips to Stay Healthy While Flying

Written by

Besides making sure that the holiday or business trip goes well, we need to first take care of ourselves while flying. There are a number of health risks that we should be aware of. These include exposure to pathogens; the agents causing infections and diseases, dehydration, blood clot formation, and jetlag.

But don’t worry! We can make a change by practicing these 5 tips.

  1. Clean our surroundings

First thing first, when we get to our flight seat, we should wipe down the armrest, seat belt, tray table and seat. Use sanitizing wipes containing alcohol to disinfect them from bacteria and germs. Imagine how many germs there’ll be considering people of different countries, diets, health conditions and hygiene practices had been on that flight!

  1. Increase our immunity

Before going anywhere overseas, we are reminded to consume as much vitamin C as we can. We can get it through broccoli, cauliflower, red and green peppers, cabbage, tomato, and of course the citrus fruits like kiwi, orange, and grapefruit! Also, make sure that we have taken the required vaccines several weeks before our flight.

  1. Drink plenty of water

There’s a reason why people always say “Drink lots of water and you’ll be fine!”. While in the plane, we could get dehydrated due to the dry air and air-conditioned confined space. When our body becomes lack of water, we could feel uncomfortable and become more prone to diseases due to the weakened immune system.

  1. Try to make movements every once in a while

Flights that are more than 4 hours is considered a long one. During long flights, there’s a chance that blood clotting and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) might develop. So it’s very advisable that we take some time to do some stretching or walk along the aisle to improve the blood circulation. Compression socks might also come in handy to prevent swelling. Try asking our physician for an opinion on that.

  1. Keep our hands clean!

Our hands are basically one of the hotspots for germs to reside on. Always wash our hand when we use the plane’s bathroom and sanitize them with the alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Ensure that our hands are clean before consuming anything.

Other than these five tips, we could also make sure that we have enough sleep and rest prior to our departure. If we happen to be sleep deprived, we’ll be more prone to become sick. We can also try adjusting the air ventilation to medium setting to keep away the potential infectious diseases from coming to our space.
